Simonton Windows to be Featured on A&E Network’s Flip This House
PARKERSBURG, W. VA. – After Hurricane Ike wrecked havoc on homes in Galveston, Texas this past summer, A&E’s Flip This House show came to town. They focused their attention on a 2,188 square-foot home that was under more than four feet of water as a result of the seawall being breached during the hurricane.
Now, with the help of Simonton Windows®, the team at Flip This House is preparing to transform the home and resell it. Part of the rebuild challenge was removing mold that had settled in the home and reconstructing it to meet local building codes in the Galveston coastal area.
“Water and wind can do incredible damage to a home during a hurricane,” says Christopher Burk, product manager for Simonton Windows. “For this house renovation project, Simonton provided impact-resistant Simonton StormBreaker Plus® products that meet the building code requirements for impact protection for coastal area construction.
“The insulating glass unit in these windows features impact-resistant laminated glass, which consists of a durable invisible plastic interlayer sandwiched between two pieces of inner glass, along with an outer layer of tempered glass. The high-performance laminated glass is designed to help resist severe weather and penetration from windborne debris that can jeopardize a home and its contents during a high-wind event, such as a hurricane. Even if the outer layer of tempered glass is shattered, the tough interlayer won’t be compromised. It will not break out of its frame as a result of the tough interlayer, which reduces the possibility of injury or damage.”
Additionally, the Simonton StormBreaker Plus® windows used in the Galveston project work 24/7 and never need to be boarded up or shuttered when maintained. The durability of the windows will help protect the home from noise and solar penetration, impedes intrusion efforts and will be easy to maintain. Specified to be ENERGY STAR® qualified, the windows will also help the new homeowners save on heating and cooling costs. A&E Network will feature the Galveston project home in an episode of Flip This House in the Spring of 2009.
